Our young singers have set a new bar for musical excellence for themselves and for future generations of AMP students. Our outstanding AMP choral faculty also deserve our recognition and gratitude for their pedagogical skill and unwavering belief in our children’s abilities to be young musicians of the highest caliber.”

THE AMP EXPERIENCE

AN AFTERNOON AT PULLMAN YARDS FEATURING THE ENTIRE ROSTER OF AMP’S YOUNG MUSICIANS

Since AMP launched almost 14 years ago with just 30 elementary school students, the organization has grown by leaps and bounds. We have multiple programs including band, orchestra and choir. We perform 75 concerts annually. And we serve over 700 students year.

But even with this growth, because we operate multiple programs at the same time, many members of the AMP community don’t know about each other. Students may not know that there are hundreds of students just like them doing similar programming at a different AMP site. Parents and guardians may not know that we have a choir program, a band program, and an orchestra program. Our faculty may not know that there are 50 other teaching artists on our roster!

The AMP Experience is an effort to bring together our entire community for an afternoon of music and fellowship. This event is big-time first for AMP. Join us for The AMP Experience on Sunday October 15 at 3:00PM at Pullman Yards. For the first time ever, every student will perform and also see every other student performa as well. The rousing finale will see all 300+ current AMP students perform together. This event is not to be missed!

There will be several sets of music interspersed with time for fellowship, food trucks and family. This is a family friendly event. Bring the kids, bring friends, and bring a few dollars for food, and AMP merchandise!

Reserve your free ticket to The AMP Experience, here.

Sterling Elliott Makes Brilliant AMP Debut

Sterling Elliott performing with the AMP Summer Series Festival Orchestra on Opening Night.

Superstar cellist Sterling Elliott made a brilliant debut at AMP. On Friday June 9 – the Opening Night of the AMP Summer Series – Mr. Elliott performed the Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor by Camille Saint-Saens, with the AMP Summer Series Festival Orchestra, under the direction of John Young Shik Concklin. Mr. Elliott, 24 years old, performed to a sold-out audience at Sylvan Hills Middle School. He received several standing ovations, and performed an encore.

L to R: John Young Shik Concklin, conductor; Aisha Moody, Co-Founder & Chief Program Officer of AMP; Sterling Elliott; Dantes Rameau, Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of AMP.

Mr. Elliott’s performance was part of his two-day artistic residency at the Atlanta Music Project, which included giving a masterclass for AMP’s cello students, a Fireside Chat with Terrance McKnight of WQXR, New York City’s only classical music radio station, a private mentorship session with AMP Summer Series students, and finally his solo performance with the AMP Summer Series Festival Orchestra.

AMP student cellist Faith Clark performs Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 during Sterling Elliott’s masterclass.

Mr. Elliott, who won the Sphinx Competition at just 19 years of age, is currently an Artist Diploma student at The Juilliard School. He also earned his Bachelor and Master of Music at same institution. He has been on the concert circuit since high school and has performed as soloist with most of the major symphony orchestras in the country, including the Los Angels Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

With this amazing breadth of artistic experience, Mr. Elliott heard four AMP student cellists perform and provided them with feedback, all in a public forum at the AMP Center. All the students and attendees received insight on how Mr. Elliott approaches music and playing cello. They also had the pleasure of hearing him demonstrate some of the music that the cello students presented. When the master artist demonstrates, that is always a highlight of a masterclass!

Terrance McKnight and Sterling Elliott during their Fireside Chat, part of Sterling’s residency at the AMP Summer Series.

During an intimate fireside chat at the AMP Center for Performance & Education, moderated by Terrance McKnight, Mr. Elliott shared how his mother is responsible for his early start in music. He explained that in his formative years, he played in a string quartet with his siblings, and they performed informal concerts around town at malls, libraries and more. A surprise bonus for those in attendance, Mr. Elliott performed a short, unaccompanied solo, which he would end up performing as an encore at Opening Night.

About Sterling Elliott

Acclaimed for his stellar stage presence and joyous musicianship, cellist Sterling Elliott is a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and the winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition. Already in his young career, he has appeared with such major orchestras as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, and the Dallas Symphony, with noted conductors Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Thomas Wilkins, Jeffrey Kahane, Bramwell Tovey, Mei Ann Chen and others. Last summer, he made his Aspen Festival debut, performing the Brahms Double Concerto with Gil Shaham, and he made his German debut in Munich in May 2022, performing chamber music with Daniel Hope.

The 2022-2023 season will see his debuts with the Colorado Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, and Ft. Worth Symphony, among others, with return appearances including the Buffalo Philharmonic. He will appear in recital under the auspices of the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, Shriver Hall in Baltimore, the Tippet Rise Festival and Capitol Region Classical in Albany, NY. In October he participated in the Caramoor Music Festival’s prestigious Evnin Rising Stars series, a weeklong program of coaching and chamber music culminating in a performance in Katonah, NY.

Fast becoming a favorite on the summer festival circuit, Sterling has appeared at Music@Menlo, Chamberfest in Cleveland and Chamberfest Northwest in Calgary, Music at Angel Fire and the La Jolla Music Society.

As the youngest of three siblings, Sterling did not want to play the cello but the violin like his older brother and sister. After a bit of encouragement, he completed The Elliott Family String Quartet by learning to play the cello at the age of three under the direction of Suzuki Cello teacher Susan Hines.

He went on to make his concerto debut at the age of 7 by winning the Junior Division of the PYO Concerto Competition, and later the 2014 Richmond Symphony Concerto Competition and the Bay Youth Orchestra of Virginia Concerto Competition.

Sterling has a long history with the Sphinx Organization where he first received 2nd place in the 2013 National Sphinx Competition Junior Division, then won the 2014 Junior Division. In 2016 he received the Organization’s Isaac Stern Award and toured with the Sphinx Virtuosi in 2018 before winning in 2019.

Sterling is a two-time alum of NPR’s From the Top where he was a recipient of a scholarship from The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation and performed several concerts in Switzerland at the 2019 World Economic Forum. He is a Young Strings of America ambassador for SHAR Strings.

In 2019, he was the first recipient of The National Arts Club’s Herman and Mary Neuman Music Scholarship Award. In Spring 2022, Sterling participated in Performance Today’s Young Artist Residency, which featured educational events, interviews and a feature on the nationally syndicated radio program.

Sterling completed both his Bachelors (BM ’21) and Masters (MM ’23) degrees at The Juilliard School as a receipt of the prestigious Kovner Fellowship. He will be pursing an Artist Diploma at Juilliard under the tutelage of Joel Krosnick and Clara Kim.

Sterling performs on a 1741 Gennaro Gagliano cello on loan through the Robert F. Smith Fine String Patron Program, in partnership with the Sphinx Organization.

AMP Performs at Annual State of the City Breakfast

At the invitation of Mayor Andre Dickens, the Atlanta Music Project Youth Orchestra and Choir had the honor of performing the national anthem at the 2023 Annual Mayor’s State of the City Breakfast. The performance was the world premiere of an arrangement of the piece co-written by B.E. Boykin and Nicole Neely.

The event took place at the famous Marriott Marquis, and included many of the city’s business, political and community leaders. Following the Mayor’s entrance with a Brass Band from Benjamin E. Mays High School, the Presentation of Flags, and the Pledge of Allegiance, the room turned its attention to the young musicians of the Atlanta Music Project and conductor B.E. Boykin.

With the event being streamed live on all the city’s news channels and social media, the AMP students delivered a rousing rendition of the the Star Spangled Banner, ending in applause from the over 1,000 attendees.

Thank you to Mayor Andre Dickens, the City of Atlanta, and to all those in attendance for supporting AMP. This opportunity was definitively in line with our mission to empower youth to realize their possibilities through music.

AMP Senior Choir Performs at Opening of New Grady Hospital Pavilion

The week was off to a great start, as the Atlanta Music Project had the opportunity to participate in a monumental occasion for Atlanta’s public hospital.

Yesterday morning Grady Memorial Hospital and the Grady Health Foundation celebrated the opening of a new building, named the Correll Pavilion. The Correll  Pavilion will increase the hospital’s capacity by 45% and increase the amount of operating rooms by 25%.

Highlights of the ribbon-cutting ceremony included remarks from Grady Board Chair Larry Gellerstedt, Fulton County Commission Chairman Rob Pitts, and DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. The audience included members of the Correll Family as well as other supporters of the $230 million capital campaign that made the building  a reality.

At the generous invitation of the Grady Health Foundation, the Atlanta Music Project Senior Choir opened the festivities with a rousing performance of “Brand New Day” from the musical The Wiz. The music continued with a performance of the classic “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers. Led by veteran AMP teaching artist Keeyen Martin, the choir performed with panache to a standing-room only audience.

Thank you to the Grady Health Foundation for having us, and congratulations Grady Memorial Hospital!
