Alumni Spotlight: Tatiana Dickerson

The article below was written by Tatiana Dickerson (AMP Class of ‘24). Tatiana was a member of the Senior Youth Choir, and attended DeKalb School of the Arts. This fall, she will attend Florida A&M University to study Music Performance and Musical Theatre.

Tatiana in her early years at AMP Academy

Since I was young, AMP has played such a big role in my life.
My journey began in the second grade, when my grandmother signed me up in the AMP Preparatory Choir. At that time, AMP had just started as an after-school program at my school, Ivy Prep Academy. From having rehearsals at the Gilbert House to when they opened their own doors on Dill Ave, I have seen AMP grow so much.
I have so many memories from those early days at AMP, meeting amazing people and having incredible opportunities. One memory I look fondly on was when drummer Lil’ John Roberts complimented my voice, saying, I “would be a star one day”.

Fast forward to 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was in the AMP Junior Youth Choir when suddenly [programming] went virtual. I struggled with my mental health and felt isolated in quarantine. It was really challenging to go from singing in person to hearing my voice through a computer screen. For these reasons, I decided to step back from AMP.

During my time away, I realized I was missing out on so many amazing opportunities. But when I came back, I was warmly welcomed by Ms. Aisha (AMP Co-Founder and Chief Program Officer), Ms. Breanna (AMP Director of Choral Programs) and Mr. Keeyen (AMP Voice Teaching Artist). It felt comforting and nostalgic to come back to the place and people that have played such a huge role in nurturing my vocal abilities and self-confidence.

Tatiana with Miriam Huppert at her high school commencement ceremony

“AMP provided me the training, performance opportunities, and friendships I needed to thrive as a musician.”

When I started at AMP, singing was just something I did. Now, I am a musician.

Without AMP, I don’t think I would have realized my huge passion for performing. They created a safe and caring place for me to meet like-minded people. AMP provided me the training, performance opportunities, and friendships I needed to thrive as a musician.

As a performer, I have learned important skill sets like how to differentiate between choral singing and solo singing. I’ve also learned how to care for my voice, how to practice, and read music. All of these skills along with Ms. Miriam‘s (Director of College & Career Services) support have helped prepare me to pursue Musical Theatre and Music Performance this fall at Florida A&M University.

I feel so lucky and blessed to be able to do what I love and have such an amazing start in my career. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Atlanta Music Project.

announced category winner at the World Choir Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

AMP Senior Youth Orchestra Musicians Reflect

on Spring Break Trip to Ottawa, Canada

“As a half-Canadian, I enjoyed learning more about Canada’s government. Getting to eat Beavertails for the first time was a highlight. I had an absolute blast at the National Arts Centre Orchestra concert, as well as at dinner with the De La Salle students before. It was fun to get to know some of them better. The reception after our concert was lots of fun as well. Another great benefit from the trip was the camaraderie that developed between AMP students. I feel like having this shared experience brought the orchestra together in ways we weren’t before, and I hope this carries over into next year!”
-Priya Gingrich, a 15-year-old cellist, reflects on experiencing Canadian culture, and growing closer with her ensemble during the Senior Youth Orchestra’s Spring Break trip to Ottawa, Canada.
“The De La Salle High School orchestra students brought a lot of emotion to the music, and I think that came from the energy in the room. Their conductor, Mr. Hutt, was cracking jokes the entire time, and as an ensemble, they were just happy. They genuinely seemed to have so much fun being there with us, like we did with them. They welcomed us with open arms, and really encouraged us.”
-Joshua Croom, a 17-year-old violist, shares the impact of befriending De La Salle’s high school orchestra.
“Culturally, it was interesting to see how different Canada is. It was fun to experience how they incorporate two languages into everyday life, French and English. I also really enjoyed the architecture. In Georgia, it’s all about basketball, football and marching band. But Canadians are all about their hockey! So going to the Ottawa Senators game kind of started a hockey obsession for a lot of us.
-Caliah Matamoros, a 16-year-old violin student, sharing her fascination with Candian culture and a newfound love for hockey on the Senior Youth Orchestra’s Spring Break trip to Ottawa, Canada.
“One of my most valuable takeaways was watching how De La Salle High School students use staccato, and their sharp articulation of the notes. For their upbow staccato, they used this technique where they would rotate their wrists while doing the staccato. It set the tone for the Scherzo movement of the Dvorak piece, making for a sharper sound.”
-Jackson Betts, a 17-year-old violinist, reflects on his experience rehearsing and performing with De La Salle High School students in Ottawa, Canada on the Senior Youth Orchestra’s Spring Break trip.
“I feel like the connection between the De La Salle kids and the AMP kids was strong. We taught them how to wobble! One of the highlights of the trip for me was the National Arts Centre Orchestra concert. Even though I play the oboe, the first violinist inspired me with the passion, movement, and emotion that they played with.”
-Nehemiah Preston, a 14-year-old oboist, describes his experience on AMP’s Spring Break trip to Ottawa, Canada.
“For me, one of the highlights from the trip to Canada was how extremely friendly and welcoming the De La Salle High School students were. They knew the repertoire on a deep level, and really helped us bring it to life. People-wise, location wise, Canada was a 11/10 experience”.
-Yusef Henry, a 16-year-old double bassist, reminisces on his Spring Break trip to Ottawa, Canada with the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra.

AMP Hosts Weeklong Adjudications to Propel Academy Students’ Artistic Growth

.

From May 6th to 10th, AMP hosted its annual adjudications of the 2023-2024 AMP Academy students. Adjudications are performance-based exams that commonly occur during music festivals, auditions, and competitions. Adjudicators listened and evaluated performances while offering feedback based on certain criteria. The adjudicators consisted of educators and individuals holding doctoral degrees in their respective disciplines: Dr. Concong Bi and Katerina Rakestraw (strings), Dr. Thomas Kim (winds, brass, and percussion), Letricia Henson (voice), and Dr. Pamela Burns-Bell (voice).

AMP Academy Adjudications include scales, arpeggios, and sight-singing exercises to assess the skills students have developed during their private lessons. “These exams evaluate our students’ artistic and musical progress, helping us tailor our services to better serve them and their families,” says Associate Director of AMP Academy, Amber Smith.
“I’m here to hear students play scales and two solo pieces. I’m looking for fluency in rhythm, tone, and their technique”, says Dr. Thomas Kim. “This is only my first year as an adjudicator, but I see a lot of talent and passion in these students, and the hard work of their teachers behind this. I really respect that.”
Students who successfully pass adjudications and fulfill the recital performance requirements maintain their place in AMP Academy, while those who don’t obtain a passing score must re-apply in the fall. The ultimate goal of adjudications is to better prepare students to confidently present themselves in front of professional musicians and showcase their artistic abilities.

Maya at her AMP Academy adjudications.

Preston at his AMP Academy adjudications.

“Even if she doesn’t sing her whole life, it’s helping her to learn to work for a goal. She’s learning diligence in disappointment and success.”

-Jennifer, AMP Parent and Maya’s mother

AMP Academy students Preston Harris and Maya Winfrey reflect on preparing for adjudications, their experience going through the exam, and the impact AMP Academy has had on their personal and artistic growth overall:

“Going into my adjudication, I had a bit of nervousness, especially when it comes to sight-reading, because it’s an acquired skill”, exclaims Maya Winfrey, a vocalist in AMP Academy. “During the adjudication, I felt at ease because the sight-reading wasn’t that difficult at all. Coming out of it, I felt relieved.” Maya credits her practice regimen and repetition for her successful exam. “My AMP Voice Teacher, Mrs. English-Robinson, gave me resources to help [with sight reading], so I looked up a lot of examples in a few different keys. For her AMP peers, and fellow musicians, looking to prepare for exams like adjudications, Maya advises to “get outside of your head, and establish good practice habits on your own schedule”.

Like Maya, Preston credits practice for his “smooth” exam, alongside warming up his instrument. “When I was going to the adjudication room, I was tense and nervous because I didn’t want to mess up. But once I warmed up my instrument, got some warm air through it, I was good”. He was excited about the feedback he received from his adjudicator Dr. Kim, stating that he received “a lot of good compliments” on his solo pieces in particular.

For AMP Academy students and families, taking on adjudication prep, alongside weekly ensemble and private lessons makes for an intense Spring schedule. But Maya and Preston’s mothers find that the sacrifice and time commitment is invaluable to their families’ well-being as a whole. “We’re trying to build good humans that are well-rounded”, says Maya’s mother, Jennifer. “Even if she doesn’t sing her whole life, it’s helping her to learn to work for a goal. She’s learning diligence in disappointment and success”. Tiffany Harris’ biggest encouragement to other families is to “decide on your goals, consider your children’s future is worth making the sacrifice”. She has witnessed a transformation of sorts in Preston, who has been a part of AMP Academy for nearly three years. “His self-esteem [is impacted] in a positive manner, and it’s helped him be more disciplined in his school work”.

For both students, that sacrifice of extra visits to the AMP Center and countless practice times yields many rewards:”I think about where I’ve started, how far I’ve come, and what I could become. My higher range has improved, my tone in my lower [register] as an alto has improved, and so has my confidence”, says Maya.

“Before I started AMP, I thought I’d never be able to understand how to play music,” says Preston. “I just never thought I’d be able to do it ever. My advice [to other students] would be if something gets too hard, don’t feed into it – don’t quit. Keep practicing.”

Randall Goosby Inspires Students in Exclusive AMP Masterclass & Emory University Recital

On Thursday, March 4th, the Atlanta Music Project welcomed American concert violinist Randall Goosby for an inspiring violin masterclass with AMP Academy students Paris Adams, Autumn Inman, and Ethan Waithe.

Fresh from a U.S. recital tour and preparing for an upcoming European concert tour, Goosby graciously shared his time and expertise with our students by refining their violin technique and musicianship.

Following the masterclass, attendees engaged in a fireside chat moderated by Amber Smith, Associate Director of the AMP Academy. Goosby shared his journey as a young classical musician, and insights into his successes and struggles along the way.

The 26-year old violinist made his debut with the Jacksonville Symphony at age nine. By age 13, he performed with the New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and was the youngest to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition. A former student of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho, he received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Artist Diploma degrees from The Juilliard School. He is an alumni of the Perlman Music Program and studied previously with Philippe Quint. He was also featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk.

Goosby has performed with orchestras across the United States including the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, and New World Symphony. His recital appearances have included the Kennedy Center in New York, Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, and Wigmore Hall in London.

Goosby, who is of Korean and African-American descent, is vocal about his personal mission to foster a more inclusive and accessible culture within classical music. He is dedicated to spotlighting under-represented composers, furthering his commitment to diversity and equity in the classical music world.

“I don’t want my legacy to be on the stage,” Randall mused at the fireside chat. “I want to have brought people, communities, families, and generations who look like us into an art form that, historically, we’ve had no business in.”

The following Friday evening, AMP Preparatory String Orchestra students eagerly flooded Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts to witness Goosby’s performance with pianist Zhu Wang. “It was amazing, because I actually got to see him in real life. And that I could only dream of” said Malaika, who plays viola in the Prep String Orchestra. “I’m average at viola, but seeing him made me want to try my absolute best”.

AMP was able to connect with Randall Goosby through Kathryn Colegrove, Associate Director for Programming and Outreach at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University. “I’d heard about the impactful work AMP was doing, and [was able to connect] with Dantes Rameau and Aisha Moody last March. As chance would have it, Dantes had already been looking into opportunities for AMP with Randall Goosby”, says Kathryn. “As we were set to present Mr. Goosby in a recital concert, it seemed to be the perfect fit to expand the Schwartz Center’s community engagement activities outside of our doors and work directly with AMP for a student master class and Q & A”.

Some students who attended Goosby’s Emory performance were starstruck, nearly at a loss for words when sharing about their experience with Randall. Others felt nervous, and “jittery”. But the universal experience among them was the profound sense of inspiration they felt after being in Randall’s presence and witnessing his exceptional gift.

“Seeing Randall Goosby showed me that even though I struggle in violin, if I practice hard enough, I can be better at it,” AMP Prep String Orchestra student Kaitlyn Taylor said confidently when asked about the impact of seeing Goosby. Feruzi Tiya’s sentiment was similar, as he shared, “He inspires me to be a great musician”. Feruzi’s brother, Manzo, says that even as a cello student, “[Randall] inspired me to go faster with my bow strokes,” aspiring to work his way up “practicing everyday for 5 hours when I’m older.”

On behalf of the AMP staff and faculty, we extend our deepest gratitude to Randall Goosby and his management team for graciously providing this invaluable opportunity to connect with Randall during the masterclass and fireside chat, enjoy his performance, and benefit from his expertise.

Additionally, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University for facilitating our connection with Randall Goosby for this special event.

BREAKING NEWS: AMP Senior Youth Ensembles to Embark on First Ever International Performances to Canada and New Zealand

Trips Will Include AMP Senior Youth Choir’s First Appearance at the World Choir Games

Atlanta, GA – March 29, 2024 – The Atlanta Music Project announces that, for the first time since its inception in 2010, the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra and Choir will travel internationally for performances and competitions. These opportunities for the student musicians of AMP to travel and perform outside of the Atlanta Metro are made possible thanks to AMP’s Travel & Tour Endowment, which was established in 2023 by an anonymous donor and the Chestnut Family Foundation.

From April 3, 2024 to April 7, 2024, the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra, under the direction of conductor John Young Shik Concklin, will travel to Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The orchestra will perform two concerts, both taking place at École Secondaire Publique De La Salle, a French, public high school boasting a renowned performing arts program known as the “Centre d’Excellence Artistique de l’Ontario” (CEAO). AMP Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dantes Rameau is an alumnus of De La Salle’s instrumental music program.

The AMP orchestra’s program will include music by two Black composers: “Danse Negre” by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and “Visions of the Sky” by Adrian B. Sims. In an exciting artistic collaboration, The CEAO Senior String Orchestra will join the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra Strings on stage to perform two pieces: “Adoration” by Florence Price (a third Black composer) and the “Serenade for Strings in E Major Opus 22” by Antonín Dvořák. The Serenade for Strings will be co-conducted by Mr. Concklin and Jason Hutt, conductor of the CEAO Senior String Orchestra.

Additionally, the AMP Senior Youth Orchestra Winds will perform two pieces together with the KidPlayers (wind students) from Ottawa’s OrKidstra program. OrKidstra is a social development program that empowers kids from equity-deserving communities by teaching life skills through playing and singing music together. OrKidstra’s Co-Founder and Executive & Artistic Director Tina Fedeski will conduct the pieces.

The first concert will be a performance for the students of the high school on Thursday April 4. The second concert will be open to the public and take place on Friday April 5 at 7:00pm EST at De La Salle. Tickets to the Friday concert can be reserved here.

AMP and De La Salle students will also jointly attend a concert of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. AMP students will experience dining and cultural activities in Ottawa, including an Ottawa Senators hockey game.

From July 7, 2024 to July 14, 2024, the AMP Senior Youth Choir, under the direction of conductor B.E. Boykin, will travel to Auckland, New Zealand to compete in the 2024 World Choir Games. Based on Olympic ideals, the World Choir Games is the world’s biggest choir competition taking place every two years on different continents. This is the second time AMP’s Senior Youth Choir has been invited to compete in the competition, the first being for the 2020 World Choir Games in Belgium, which were postponed due to the COVID pandemic.

AMP will perform in the Open Competition category within the Youth Choir division. In addition to their competition performance, the AMP Senior Youth Choir will also perform in a Friendship Concert, a free public concert featuring choirs from around the world.

For the competition, the AMP choir will perform music by Black and Latinx composers. Their repertoire includes “Be Still and Know” by Stacey V. Gibbs, “Elijah Rock” arranged by Moses G. Hogan, “Ave Maria” by Robert Nathaniel Dett, and “Mata del Anima Sola” by Antonio Estévez. At the Friendship Concert, the choir will perform “Holding the Light,” a piece composed by their conductor B.E. Boykin. The Open Competition and Friendship Concert dates will be determined by the World Choir Games. AMP students will experience tourist attractions and cultural activities in Auckland.

“Over the past 14 years, AMP’s talented and hard-working young musicians have had the opportunity to perform concerts in most of Atlanta’s major venues, including the Woodruff Arts Center, The Fox Theatre, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” stated Dantes Rameau, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AMP. He continued, “Our students began asking us about performing outside of Atlanta a few years ago, as they felt confident about the development of their craft and wanted to share it with a wider audience while having the chance to experience new destinations and cultures. I’m grateful to the anonymous donor and the Chestnut Family Foundation – who both share our vision for providing world-class music training and performance opportunities – for their very generous support of our travel and tour.”

“I am beyond excited for our young musicians,” said Aisha Moody, Co-Founder and Chief Program Officer of the AMP. She continued, “Because of their commitment to the pursuit of musical excellence and the outstanding tutelage of our conductors and faculty, they will now get a taste of life as professional musicians touring internationally. With the establishment of our Travel and Tour Endowment Fund, AMP students will get to experience the other countries all while bringing a piece of Atlanta culture and artistry to the world for years to come. Thank you to École Secondaire Publique De La Salle and OrKidstra in Ottawa and the World Choir Games for being such terrific partners in this first-ever international, musical adventure for AMP. Canada and New Zealand, here we come!”
